ORION CEMETERY
Catalogued April 1, 1975 by H. A. Dieter. Located on the north edge of
the village of Orion, section 31, Town of Orion. The wire fenced
enclosures (200' X 500') as well as the grounds, are in poor condition.
Burials have mostly followed the crest of the high ground overlooking
the village. The first known burial was in 1844. Like all river towns
it became the first point of settlement for northbound pioneers. Orion
then was one of many ports of entry into Richland County. Three very
old foot markers were found on one lot. One other metal stake marker
stands near the small McCoy marker. No visible identification on any of
the four. There was no other indication of unmarked graves.
However, it was reported that one John Nipple, early day blacksmith in
Orion village, was buried here in the early 1850's. Others by that name
were later found living in the Brodhead area, Green County, Wisconsin.
